Reports are suggesting Everton's sudden urge for obscure, right sided defenders comes as a result of Phil Neville needing an ankle operation.

If accurate, it would be another bitter pill for David Moyes to swallow, with Tony Hibbert also sidelined. It is believed Neville has been playing through the pain barrier since the back end of last season.

Record.pt, a respected Portuguese newspaper, is claiming that Everton could still go back in with an increased offer for Joao Moutinho, although the chance is "remote.

Everton have apparently had one enquiry ignored but could still go back with an offer of 20m Euros according to the paper.

Albert Riera is set to snub Everton and move to Liverpool after Espanyol and the Anfield club battled out a new deal which reflects the value of Everton's bid.

The Blues had attempted to hijack Liverpool's bid by offering the Spanish club what they actually want for the player, but he has stuck to his guns in his bid to move to Liverpool.

Being from hundreds of miles away, we can expect, in broken English, a statement saying that Liverpool were his boyhood club once he signs.

Phil Neville believes Everton need to strengthen the squad if we are to compete for the top honours next season in any competition, although he has hinted that the manager may not be buying anyone until after the pre-season tour of America.

"You leave all the worrying up to the manager because my main worry is the players who are injured," said Neville.

"We need them back fit as we have five or six players who would get in our starting 11 all injured. We need them back and we need them to do a pre-season.

"Signings you leave up to the manager and I don't think many clubs are signing players as it looks like a difficult market at the moment.

"I think as time goes on towards the [transfer] deadline you will see clubs being more active in the transfer market and I am sure we will be the same.

"We go on tour to America next week and I am sure when we come back the manager will strengthen the squad.

"For the trophies we are aiming for and the competitions we are playing in, we will need a bigger squad than what we have got at the minute.

"We have lost four or five from last season, so we probably need four or five more players just to bolster the squad.

"We have always gone into the season with a smaller squad than most and the Uefa Cup campaign does take a lot out of you, so four or five players will see us right for next season."...discuss this on the forums
