Reports are suggesting Everton's sudden urge for obscure, right sided defenders comes as a result of Phil Neville needing an ankle operation.

If accurate, it would be another bitter pill for David Moyes to swallow, with Tony Hibbert also sidelined. It is believed Neville has been playing through the pain barrier since the back end of last season.

Record.pt, a respected Portuguese newspaper, is claiming that Everton could still go back in with an increased offer for Joao Moutinho, although the chance is "remote.

Everton have apparently had one enquiry ignored but could still go back with an offer of 20m Euros according to the paper.

Albert Riera is set to snub Everton and move to Liverpool after Espanyol and the Anfield club battled out a new deal which reflects the value of Everton's bid.

The Blues had attempted to hijack Liverpool's bid by offering the Spanish club what they actually want for the player, but he has stuck to his guns in his bid to move to Liverpool.

Being from hundreds of miles away, we can expect, in broken English, a statement saying that Liverpool were his boyhood club once he signs.

Gary Lineker - Everton Legend
Si, Thursday 28 July 2005 - 15:55:12

Gary Lineker
Born : 30 November 1960
Birthplace : Leicester
Height : 5ft 11ins
Although Lineker was only at Everton for one season, and failed to win any trophies during that year, there is little doubt that he will always belong in any "Hall of Fame" of Everton players, thanks to his scoring feats during that single season at Goodison Park.
Lineker started his career at Leicester, a club in which he now owns major stock, and was proud to be a member of the team that was promoted to old first divisiion in 1983, and was Leicester's top scorer for four years in a row before his "big money" move to Everton in 1985.
A fee of £800,000 was agreed for Lineker after protracted negotiations between Howard Kendall, who valued him at just £400,000, and Leicester, who had a higher valuation of £1.25m.
Lineker formed a superb partnership with Graeme Sharp and went on to score 38 goals in 52 games for Everton, including three hat-tricks as he tormented defences the length and breadth of the league and as the season neared it's climax the Blues looked a reasonable bet for the double.
He won the PFA and Football Writer's Association player of the year awards, but sadly those were the only trophies he picked up in a Blue shirt, as Everton were pipped by rivals Liverpool in both league and FA Cup.
Lineker went to the World Cup finals with England in 1986 and won the Golden Boot, the only English player to have done so, and at the time he was an Everton player, another first for the Blues.
However, shortly after returning from Mexico, Lineker was sold to Barcelona for £2.5m where he helped them lift the Spanish Cup, European Cup, and Cup Winners Cup.
Lineker then joined Spurs in 1989, being top scorer in all of his three seasons with the Londoners before moving to Japanese side Grampus Eight to help form the first professional league in Japan.
Lineker scored 49 goals in 80 England appearances, and in 1992 was awarded the OBE, and his 30 league goals for Everton sealed a place in Evertonians hearts, and even if sometimes it might appear that he has forgotten his time at Everton when he appears on television, he is often quoted as saying that the Everton team he played in was the best he ever had.
